Ed Corkum of Heritage Crafts in Kingston, Nova Scotia carves small bowls, spoons, water dippers and covered dishes from spruce burls.

A burl is a growth which naturally occurs after a tree has undergone some form of stress. This growth can be the result of injury, virus, or fungus. Due to the odd shapes and textures of the grain, burls are highly sought after by wood carvers and artists. The hard interlocking grain of a burl is difficult to carve but, ideal for use in bowls and drinking cups because it is unlikely to crack.  This is a functional and beautiful product of our local forests.

Each handmade bowl is unique and signed by the artist.  Come visit our gift shop for more styles and sizes.
